Trend Spotting – What We Spotted [AUGUST EDITION]
26 Aug 2025In Malaysia’s fast-evolving digital economy, affiliate marketing is no longer a fringe opportunity. It is fast becoming a scalable, tech-enabled career path — one increasingly embraced by students, micro-influencers, and digital entrepreneurs looking to earn, grow, and lead in the creator economy.
This week, Xamble Academy, in partnership with GlobalNxt University, hosted The Ultimate Starter Guide to Affiliate, a one-day workshop focused on equipping participants with the tools to monetise content, build personal brands, and use AI technologies to scale content production efficiently.
Held in Kuala Lumpur, the event drew a diverse group of young Malaysians — from full-time content creators and budding marketers to Malaysian celebrities — all eager to explore affiliate marketing as a viable income model.
“We’re seeing real appetite from Malaysians who want to participate in the digital economy not just as consumers, but as content entrepreneurs. We want to enable them with access to education and the right tools,”
— Iv Ho, Group Head of Marketing, Xamble Group Limited
Affiliate Marketing in Malaysia: A Sector on the Rise
Recent estimates place the value of the Southeast Asia affiliate marketing sector at RM80.34 billion annually, driven by rising e-commerce transactions, brand spend on performance marketing, and the increased credibility of peer-led recommendations.
Where once influencer marketing was dominated by celebrities, today’s affiliate ecosystem rewards authenticity, relevance, and micro-niche engagement. This lowers the entry barrier for individuals who may not have large followings but who can drive meaningful results.
“Affiliate marketing blends business strategy with creator trust,” said Prof. Dr. Chinmoy Sahu, Vice Chancellor, GlobalNxt University. “As we prepare to mark our silver jubilee milestone, we wish to empower our learners with the ability to launch digital-first careers through these unique learning opportunities.”
Voices from the Creator Community
For local celebrities like Khayrisyah Kemal and Natasha Elyzza, who participated in the workshop’s influencer fireside session, the affiliate space represents more than just earning potential — it’s a mindset shift.
- “Keep going! Consistency turns effort into achievement.” — Khayrisyah
- “Let them talk. Stay focused, keep moving, and prove them wrong with everything they said you couldn’t do.” — Natasha
Next-Gen Content: How AI Tools Evolve with Social Commerce
A highlight of the workshop was the integration of AI content tools, many of which are reshaping how creators produce, publish, and monetise content. Participants received live demos and hands-on experience with:
- Prompting static images into short-form video
- AI-generated voiceovers
- Cinematic-style storytelling using prompts
- Xamble’s affiliate onboarding system, enabling attendees to activate their first affiliate links and track performances
“I created my first product video in under 30 minutes, complete with a voiceover,” said Lau, a 26-year-old participant. “It made me realise that with the right tools, content creation is no longer limited by budget or technical skills.”
Bridging Academia and Industry
The initiative is part of a broader collaboration between Xamble and GlobalNxt University to align education with the demands of Malaysia’s digital economy. Beyond theory, the programme provides participants with real brand partnerships and monetisation opportunities.
Brands like FSG and Numinara — both running active affiliate campaigns through Xamble — contributed to the workshop by sponsoring product samples, giving creators tangible assets to work with.
“Workshops like this allow creators and affiliates to immediately apply what they’ve learned,” said Anthony, founder of FSG. “It’s not just academic, it’s revenue-ready.”
Laying the Groundwork for the Future of Work
With strong demand and positive feedback, both organisations are planning to scale the programme through structured certifications, follow-up sessions, and platform-driven creator incubators.
“We’re laying the infrastructure for Malaysia’s performance-led influence economy,” Iv added. “From content skills to compliance, from AI tools to transparent affiliate models, our goal is to make this a viable career track, not just a gig.”
Looking Ahead
As digital workforces evolve and Malaysian content creators redefine career ambitions, initiatives like this are closing the gap between education and economic opportunity.
Affiliate marketing, once dismissed as casual side income, is now being positioned as a skill-based, tech-enabled sector with long-term potential.
“This collaboration proves that education can be agile and responsive to market trends,” said Dr. Dalwinder. “And it shows that today’s students aren’t waiting for jobs, they’re creating them.”
